We are proud to launch FARMBIRD — an international project dedicated to protecting farmland birds across North-West Europe through innovation, collaboration, and action. Across Europe, farmland bird populations are declining at an alarming rate. With FARMBIRD, we are taking a new approach: combining cutting-edge technology with on-the-ground knowledge from farmers, volunteers, and researchers.
As shown in our infographic , FARMBIRD focuses on:
• Monitoring nests and chick survival
Using advanced detection methods to locate nests and track young birds
• Understanding movement and habitat use
Tracking both chicks and adult birds to learn how they interact with the landscape
• Identifying survival risks
From predator activity to agricultural practices like mowing, using acoustic sensors and camera technology
• Monitoring habitats from space
Applying satellite data and remote sensing to analyse vegetation, moisture, and habitat quality
By combining these insights, we aim to improve decision-making in land management and increase survival rates of key species such as the black-tailed godwit, lapwing, and curlew.
FARMBIRD brings together partners from across Europe, working closely with farmers, citizen scientists, and policymakers to create practical, scalable solutions.
